Correspondence : with Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, 1926-1964.

With regard to the 2 letters from Alban Berg, the letter addressed to Werfel (photocopy), in 1926, concerns Werfel's play Paulus unter den Juden; and the letter addressed to Alma Mahler (typescript) mainly concerns the departure of Clemens Krauss as director of the Vienna State Opera, in 1934. Alma's draft letter to Helene Berg (dating from 1960 or later) concerns her claims for restitution of property in postwar Austria. All of the remaining correspondence comprises items from Helene Berg addressed to Alma, breaking down chronologically as follows: 28 items dated ca. 1927 to 1935 (1 undated item might be from before 1927); 15 items dated 1936 to 1946; and 27 items dated 1947 to 1964. Also included are the following: a postcard bearing a photograph of Alban Berg; 1 journal article by Hans Ferdinand Redlich, "Der Symphoniker Alban Berg: Die Entstehungsgeschichte der 'Drei Orchesterstücke' op. 6 und ein Symphonie-Plan," published in Österreichische Musikzeitschrift around 1953; and 2 publications from George Perle concerning the Alma Mahler-Helene Berg correspondence in the period 1927 to 1937. Both of Perle's articles are dedicated precisely to the correspondence held in this collection; however, his statements about the scope of the correspondence are incorrect (he was under the mistaken impression that the correspondence collected here ended in 1937). Of Perle's 2 publications, 1 article in German, in Österreichische Musikzeitschrift (Jan 1980), gives extensive excerpts from the letters in the period he covers (1927-1937); and 1 article in English, in The International Alban-Berg Society Newsletter (Fall 1978), gives English-language summaries of the identical excerpts.
